Washing machine noisy when spinning: causes

In short: A loud rumbling noise, like a plane taking off, during the spin almost always means worn drum bearings. Banging and shaking come from worn shock absorbers, objects caught between the drum and the tub, or a machine that is not level. Worn bearings should be replaced quickly, otherwise the tub can be damaged.

Common causes

  1. The drum bearings and seal are worn.
  2. The shock absorbers or tub springs are worn.
  3. Small objects (coins, wires) have got between the drum and the tub.
  4. The machine is not level or, on a new machine, the transit bolts are still fitted.
  5. The counterweight has come loose.

What you can check yourself

  1. Check that the machine stands level and does not rock; adjust the feet.
  2. On a new machine, check that the transit bolts at the back have been removed.
  3. Turn the drum by hand with the machine off: a grinding noise or play points to worn bearings.

For your safety, unplug the machine before any check and do not open the cabinet.

When to call a technician

We replace bearings, seals and shock absorbers at your home, or, on some models with a welded tub, we tell you honestly whether the repair is still worth it.
